How do internationally trained radiographers register with the HCPC?
Checked against the regulator’s own pages, October 2026
Radiographers trained outside the UK apply through the HCPC international route. Radiographer, diagnostic radiographer and therapeutic radiographer are protected titles, so you must be on the HCPC Register to use them. You apply online, map your training and experience to the radiography standards of proficiency, and pay the £678.38 scrutiny fee.
Who this is for
Diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers who qualified outside the UK.
What the official guidance says
- The HCPC’s protected titles for this profession are radiographer, diagnostic radiographer and therapeutic radiographer. To use one of these titles you must be registered with the HCPC.
- You apply online through the international route, with sections for your qualification, professional experience, registration, English and the standards of proficiency mapping document.
- You need a certified copy of the certificate for the qualification that first let you practise, and a course information form completed and certified by your university or training institution.
- Your professional experience account can be up to 20,000 characters, most recent first, and you must explain any gap of six months or more.
- For English, the HCPC accepts IELTS at 7.0 with no element below 6.5, or OET in Radiography at 1400 with no element below 300, among other options.
- The scrutiny fee is £678.38, one-off and non-refundable. If you are accepted, the registration fee for international applicants is £370.02.
- The HCPC says a first decision takes about 3 months from receipt of a complete application.
What it does not mean
- Diagnostic and therapeutic radiography are different scopes. Your mapping must match the part of the Register your training fits.
- Working as a radiographer abroad does not let you use the title in the UK before you are registered.
- An HCPC acceptance is not a job offer or a visa.
What to do next
- 01Decide whether your training is diagnostic or therapeutic radiography.
- 02Ask your university to complete and certify the course information form.
- 03Map your training and experience to the radiographer standards of proficiency.
- 04Book IELTS or OET Radiography at an official test centre, unless your qualification is from a country the HCPC exempts.
Questions
Which OET do radiographers take for the HCPC?
The HCPC’s English page lists OET Radiography, at 1400 with no element below 300.
Can a UK-registered radiographer then move to Australia?
Australia’s Medical Radiation Practice Board has a Comparable Regulator Pathway for diagnostic radiographers and radiation therapists from the HCPC, if the qualification was accredited when they studied. See the Ahpra radiographer guide.

The visa side
Registration and the visa are separate. Migo’s visa guides cover the routes for this country, from the official government pages.
Let Migo prepare the paperwork with you
Migo AI Mobility matches your training to the right HCPC protected title, asks for your qualification, registration and identity documents, checks them and maps them to the HCPC international application, then prepares the application details for you to review. Nothing is submitted or paid without your approval. The professional experience account stays yours to write: the HCPC says it must be in your own words. For radiographers, Migo confirms whether your route is diagnostic or therapeutic before any work starts.
Your plan is free. You approve every paid step.
