How do physiotherapists trained abroad register with the HCPC?

Checked against the regulator’s own pages, October 2026

Physiotherapists trained outside the UK apply through the HCPC international route. Physiotherapist and physical therapist are protected titles, so you need HCPC registration to use them. You apply online, map your training to the physiotherapy standards of proficiency, show English at the HCPC’s level and pay the £678.38 scrutiny fee.

Who this is for

Physiotherapists and physical therapists who qualified outside the UK.

What the official guidance says

  • The HCPC’s protected titles for this profession are physiotherapist and physical therapist. To use one of these titles you must be registered with the HCPC.
  • You apply online with sections for your details, qualification, professional experience, registration and membership, English, the standards of proficiency mapping document and declarations.
  • Professional referees must have supervised you or been otherwise responsible for you professionally, and the HCPC does not accept personal email addresses for referees.
  • For English, the HCPC accepts IELTS at 7.0 with no element below 6.5, or OET in Physiotherapy at 1400 with no element below 300. The certificate must be no more than two years old when the HCPC receives your application.
  • The scrutiny fee is £678.38, one-off and non-refundable; the registration fee for international applicants is £370.02 if you are accepted.
  • If the assessors find gaps against the standards, the first decision may be a test of competence: a structured professional discussion, usually on Microsoft Teams, that you complete within 12 months.

What it does not mean

  • “Physical therapist” is protected too: you cannot use it in the UK while unregistered.
  • A degree title that matches does not guarantee acceptance. The assessors compare your actual training and experience with the standards.
  • You cannot add information after you submit, so gaps cannot be patched later.

What to do next

  1. 01Collect your certificate and the certified course information form from your university.
  2. 02Map your training and experience against each physiotherapy standard of proficiency, in your own words.
  3. 03Book IELTS or OET Physiotherapy at an official test centre, unless your qualification is from an exempt country.
  4. 04Submit and pay the scrutiny fee once every section is complete.

Let Migo prepare the paperwork with you

Migo AI Mobility matches your training to the right HCPC protected title, asks for your qualification, registration and identity documents, checks them and maps them to the HCPC international application, then prepares the application details for you to review. Nothing is submitted or paid without your approval. The professional experience account stays yours to write: the HCPC says it must be in your own words.
